History
We still often get asked, "what happened to your Mosman store?" Andrew, who owned the old store in Mosman, wanted to pursue other things so he closed down Balmoral Boards at Mosman in late 2010.
We’ve had the Narrabeen store for more than 13 years and we still had a love for snowboarding, so we bought the name outright, built a comprehensive online store, and are going strong down here on the beaches.

Snowboarding Essentials
Whether you’re new to snowboarding or need to upgrade your gear, you’ve come to the right place. When planning your next snowboarding trip, the first thing to do is to make sure you have everything you need.
If you’re a beginner or need a refresher on the essentials for snowboarding, we’ve put together a list of the items every rider will need.
1. Snowboard
This is an obvious one, and probably the most important. If you’re new to snowboarding and don’t know what kind of board you need, the first thing you’ll want to do is some research and get some advice. We will be able to recommend boards to suit you and your needs, so make sure you invest in the right one.
You’ll also want to choose a board that’s suited to the type of snowboarding you want to do - whether that’s park riding, deep powder snow, backcountry riding or on a variety of terrain.

2. Bindings
Bindings fasten your boots to the board and come in a range of sizes to fit your boots. You’ll want to make sure the bindings are suitable for your board, your boot size and offer a secure and comfortable bind.
Choosing the right bindings is very important, so make sure you check that it meets all your requirements.

3. Boots
Snowboard boots connect you to your board using bindings. The boots are designed to conform to your feet, so owning your own pair will ensure you are more comfortable. The sizing of the boots is similar to regular shoe sizes, but it can vary from brand to brand.
If you don’t know your size, you’ll want to try on your boots to make sure they’re right. They should be snug but not too tight that they are restrictive.

4. Helmet
Safety is very important when it comes to snowboarding and helmets are the most important safety item. If you’re a beginner, you will likely struggle with control so having something to protect your head is essential.
See our full range of helmets here.
5. Jacket and Pants
Not only do jackets and pants keep you warm in alpine environments but they also provide padding and protection when you have a spill. Look for a jacket and pants with a snug and comfortable fit but also allow for free movement.
Good quality jackets and pants will have a wind-proof and water-proof outer shell to protect you from the elements. They should also be breathable, which will allow sweat to escape and heat to stay in. Keeping you warm and dry.
Take a look here mens jackets and pants, womens jackets and pants, and kids jackets, pants, and one-pieces.
6. Gloves and Mitts
Gloves and mitts will protect your hands and keep them warm, so look for insulated, waterproof and durable gloves. They need to withstand the wear and tear of riding and protect your hands from constant contact with snow.
See our full range of gloves and mitts.
7. Goggles
Goggles are another essential item. They protect your eyes from snow, wind and potential flying debris when riding. There is often a lot of glare from snow, so goggles also protect your eyes from sun and glare.
Goggles should fit snug to your face and provide comfortable and unimpeded vision.

8. Socks
Boots do a good job of keeping your feet warm, but having an extra layer will provide warmth and comfort. Look for socks that wick away moisture, as your feet can sweat. If your socks are too thick, your feet will sweat too much and this can become uncomfortable and you’ll quickly lose warmth. Your socks should also be high enough that your boots do not rub against bare skin and cause irritation.
See our full range of socks here.
9. Thermals and Mid-layers
Thermals and mid-layers go underneath your jacket and pants and provide an extra layer of warmth. Layering ensures that you are warm enough and prepared for any temperature. Generally you’ll want to avoid cotton as it’s not breathable or waterproof. Synthetics or wool are better at wicking away moisture and keeping a comfortable body temperature.
Take a look at our mens thermals and mid-layers, womens thermals and mid-layers, and kids thermals and mid-layers.
10. Snowboard Bags
Travelling without protection for your board can lead to damage occurring. The best way to protect your board is to invest in a specialty snowboard bag. Bags are padded for extra protection and have handles for a convenient way to carry your board. Some also have pockets for more storage options and offer multi-board protection, meaning you can fit more than one board.
